For Julian, helping Māori agribusinesses realise the potential of their whenua, people and aspirations is more than a profession. It's a personal commitment grounded in his whakapapa, farming experience and passion for creating opportunities for future generations.
"As Māori landowners and farming businesses, we often think about success across generations rather than seasons. That's what motivates me every day, helping connect Māori dairy farmers with the knowledge, science, tools and relationships that support their aspirations."
As Head of Māori Engagement and Partnerships, Julian leads DairyNZ's relationships with Māori agribusinesses, iwi, hapū and sector partners. His work includes developing strategic partnerships, leading nationally significant projects and ensuring Māori dairy farmers can access the support, science and expertise available through DairyNZ.
"Our role is to walk alongside Māori farmers, trusts and agribusinesses. We help make DairyNZ's support more relevant, accessible and responsive, so farmers can make informed decisions that strengthen their businesses, their whenua and the outcomes they want for future generations."
Julian believes strong relationships are at the heart of meaningful progress. "When it comes to working with our partners and stakeholders, my approach is simple: build reciprocal, trusted relationships. The best outcomes happen when people work together towards a shared purpose."
Before moving into Māori agribusiness and strategy roles, Julian spent 12 years dairy farming and understands first-hand the realities of life on farm.
"I still love getting out on farm because that's where the best conversations happen. Whether it's leaning on a farm gate or sitting around the kitchen table, I believe the best solutions come from listening first."
Outside work, Julian enjoys spending time with his whānau, coaching junior rugby and contributing to his community through governance roles with his rugby club, marae, whānau farm trusts and Ahuwhenua trusts.
For Julian, the most rewarding part of his role is seeing Māori agribusinesses succeed on their own terms.
"I enjoy working alongside a wide range of stakeholders to unlock opportunities that strengthen governance, improve farm performance and create lasting benefits for Māori in dairying. When we help farmers build capability and confidence to achieve their aspirations, that's a success."
