DairyNZ Board of Directors
We have a governing board of eight members. Five are farmer-elected and three are independent, professional directors.
New Zealand dairy is world-class. Becoming a DairyNZ director is a great opportunity to help build on that strength and shape what comes next for the sector. Directors bring different perspectives, fresh thinking and practical experience to the table, helping guide decisions that support levy-paying farmers, strengthen sector resilience and ensure DairyNZ continues to invest in the priorities that matter most.
DairyNZ directors help set the direction for DairyNZ and make decisions that support dairy farmers and the wider dairy sector. The Board comprises both independent directors and farmer-elected directors (these are paid roles).
DairyNZ typically has eight board meetings annually, which can range in length from one day to two full days, excluding preparation and travel. Directors also attend extra out of session meetings when required and attend four sub-committee meetings per year (Audit and Risk or People and Culture sub committees). Board meetings occur at various locations nationwide.
DairyNZ Board directors are also often requested to represent DairyNZ at field days, farmer events or forums, attend regional meetings with farmers, or represent DairyNZ on industry boards or stakeholder groups. These commitments are additional to board meetings, but are inclusive of the role, meaning annual commitment as a director is approximately 30-35 days per year.
Each year, dairy farmers who want to help shape the future of the sector have the opportunity to develop their governance experience. At the start of each calendar year applications open for the associate director position – a role aimed at emerging leaders in the sector.
Open to levy-paying farmers, it is a non-voting role and is appointed for a one-year timeframe beginning 1 June each year. A commitment of approximately 18 days per annum and the ability to travel are required. Applications for this position open in the new year.
DairyNZ is committed to making the levy the best investment for New Zealand dairy farmers. The Directors’ Remuneration Committee (DRC) comprises DairyNZ levy payers and who are also DairyNZ Incorporated Society (DairyNZ Inc) members charged with reviewing directors’ pay each year and ensuring remuneration is fair, well managed and helps DairyNZ attract and keep capable directors who support DairyNZ’s work towards industry goals. The committee provides a report annually ahead of the annual meeting so DairyNZ levy payers can vote (digitally or by post) on remuneration. The DRC meets once or twice a year, either in person or online and the Chair may also be asked to attend the DairyNZ Annual Meeting.
